Medicare Rebates

The most common way Australians reduce the cost of psychology sessions is through Medicare. To access Medicare rebates, you need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. This gives you access to up to 10 Medicare-rebated psychology sessions per calendar year.

The process is straightforward:

  • Book a longer appointment with your GP
  • Your GP prepares a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral
  • Book your psychology session with us
  • We process your Medicare rebate on the spot in most cases

The Medicare rebate covers a portion of the session fee. The remaining amount, known as the gap fee, is your responsibility. The gap fee varies depending on the type of session and the practitioner you see.

NDIS Funding

If you are an NDIS participant with psychology included in your plan, we can provide services funded through your NDIS package. Unbound Minds is a registered NDIS provider. Our team can help you understand how to use your funding for therapy or assessments.

Private Health Insurance

Many private health insurance policies include coverage for psychology under their extras cover. The amount covered varies depending on your insurer and level of cover. You can use either Medicare or private health insurance for a session, but not both for the same appointment. Our admin team can help you work out which option provides the best outcome for you.

Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)

Many Australian employers offer Employee Assistance Programs, which provide a set number of free and confidential counselling sessions. These are typically short-term and do not require a GP referral. Check with your employer or HR team to see if this is available to you.

WorkCover and Workers Compensation

If you have experienced a psychological injury at work, you may be able to access psychology sessions through your workers compensation claim. This pathway involves your employer's insurer and usually requires approval before sessions begin.

Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA)

Veterans and eligible family members can access psychology services through DVA. A GP referral is generally required, and DVA covers the cost of approved sessions.

Private and Self-Funded

You do not need a referral or any funding pathway to see a psychologist. You can self-refer and pay the full session fee privately. Many people choose this option because it is quick, straightforward, and means you can get started without waiting for a GP appointment.

Our Commitment

We want to help you access the care you need. If cost is a concern, we encourage you to speak with our team. We can walk you through the funding options available to you and help you find a pathway that works.

Your Questions, Answered.

Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist?

No. You can self-refer and pay the full session fee. However, to access Medicare rebates you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, which covers up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

What is a gap fee and why does it exist?

The gap fee is the difference between the session fee and the Medicare rebate. It exists because the Medicare rebate has not kept pace with the actual cost of delivering quality psychological care including clinical supervision, training, and support.

Can I claim from both Medicare and private health insurance?

You can use either for a given session, but not both for the same appointment. Our admin team can help you compare which option provides the better rebate for your situation.

Are you a bulk billing psychology practice?

We are not a bulk billing practice. However, with a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare rebates cover a meaningful portion of the session fee. Contact our team to discuss your options.

How do I use NDIS funding for psychology at Unbound Minds?

If your NDIS plan includes psychology or capacity-building supports, contact our team and we will guide you through the process. We are a registered NDIS provider.
