In short
A quick, honest picture of couples therapy here, before you decide anything.
Before anything else. If there's violence, threats or control in your relationship, couples sessions aren't the right place to start. Call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 any time, or 000 in an emergency. You can also see one of our psychologists on your own.
A space where you both get heard, with a psychologist who doesn't take sides
Time for each of you on your own, as well as together
Practical ways to raise hard topics
Your pace. You decide together what happens next.
A place to decide who's right, or who's to blame
A promise to stay together, or a push to split up
Something you're locked into. You can come once and decide after.
Here's what the first steps look like.
You both meet the psychologist and each say what's been happening. Nobody needs to have it all worked out.
Your psychologist may see each of you separately, so you can speak freely. What you say on your own stays private, unless you want it shared. The usual limits apply if someone's safety is at risk.
Afterwards, you decide together whether to keep going. Saying no is okay.
Can't see yours? Call 1300 151 110 and ask. You don't have to book anything.
No. The psychologist isn't there to decide who's right. They're there to help you both understand what keeps happening between you.
That's okay. You can listen first, and speak when you're ready.
You can. Call us and we'll match you with a psychologist, then find a time that works for you.
