How we match you with the right psychologist

We’ll suggest who fits you best, then find a time that works for you both.

In this guide

The short version

  • With 25+ psychologists across Gledswood Hills, Kingswood and telehealth, we can look at fit.
  • We ask about what’s worked before and the style you’d like, not just what’s going on.
  • If it doesn’t feel quite right, we’ll match you with someone else, no reason needed, with a warm handover so you don’t tell your story twice.

Finding a psychologist shouldn’t be a lottery. This 52-second film shows how we match you.

Why our size helps

One thing that helps us match you well at Unbound Minds is our size.

We have a team of 25+ psychologists across Gledswood Hills, Kingswood and telehealth, so we can match you on fit. We’ll suggest who fits you best, then find a time that works for you both.

What we’ll ask you

We’ve built a whole system around it. When you reach out to us, our team will ask more than just, “What’s going on?” We’ll ask about:

  • What’s worked (or hasn’t) in the past
  • What kind of communication style you prefer
  • Whether you want someone direct or gentle, structured or open-ended

We take the time to listen to what you need, not just clinically, but relationally.

Why fit matters

Across nearly 300 studies of adult therapy, with more than 30,000 people, the relationship between a client and their psychologist has consistently predicted how well therapy goes (Flückiger and colleagues, 2018). That’s why we take care with who you see, and why we want to hear if it doesn’t feel right. Raising it gives you and your psychologist the chance to sort it out, and research links that kind of repair with better results (Eubanks and colleagues, 2018).

Our psychologists differ in what they focus on and how they work.

  • Some of our psychologists focus on trauma. Others work mostly with ADHD.
  • Some work in a gentle, reflective way. Others are more structured and direct.
  • Some work mostly with teens, others with busy professionals and parents.

If it doesn’t feel quite right

No matter what you’re bringing into the room, chances are we have someone who’s a good fit. We aim to get it right first time. And if it doesn’t feel quite right? That’s okay too. Tell us and we’ll match you with someone else on the team, no reason needed.

With your permission, your two psychologists do a warm handover. They talk through your history together, in person when they work from the same location, so you don’t have to tell your story twice. No one takes it personally. It’s part of the job, and we’re all on the same team, yours.
