Types of Therapy We Use

At Unbound Minds, clinical excellence is one of our core pillars. That means we don’t dabble - we use therapy approaches that are grounded in research, tested in clinical settings, and shown to actually work. Every therapy we offer is backed by evidence and guided by compassion.

We don’t believe in trendy quick fixes or generic advice. Our psychologists are trained in evidence-based, gold-standard approaches - and they know how to apply them in a way that’s relevant, human, and tailored to your unique situation.

Here are a few of the therapy types we might use:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): A structured, practical approach that helps you understand and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. Great for anxiety, depression, and day-to-day overwhelm.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Focuses on helping you accept what you can’t control and take committed action toward the life you want, based on your values.
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Excellent for emotion regulation and distress tolerance, especially for clients who experience intense emotions or interpersonal struggles.
  • Play Therapy & Child-Centred Therapy: For our younger clients, therapy can look like drawing, playing, and storytelling - but make no mistake, the work is deep. These methods help kids explore emotions and build resilience in a way that feels safe.
  • Gottman-Informed Couples Therapy: Based on decades of research into what makes relationships thrive (or crumble), this approach supports couples to communicate better, manage conflict, and rebuild connection.
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT): A powerful option for people who are hard on themselves. It helps develop a kinder inner voice, reduce shame, and build self-worth.

We also weave in elements of motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, mindfulness-based techniques, and behavioural strategies depending on what’s going on for you.

You don’t need to walk in knowing which therapy type is right. That’s our job. We’ll work with you to understand what’s happening beneath the surface and draw on the right tools to help you move forward with clarity and care.
