What Students Seek Support For

University can trigger challenges you may not have faced before. Many students reach out for counselling due to:

  • Academic pressure, perfectionism or fear of failure
  • Stress and burnout from balancing study, work and life
  • Exam anxiety or performance stress
  • Depression, low motivation or emotional exhaustion
  • Difficulty adjusting to university routines
  • Homesickness or loneliness in the transition to adulthood
  • Relationship stress, breakups or friendship issues
  • Procrastination, attention difficulties or feeling “stuck”
  • Identity questions and uncertainty about the future

Counselling helps you make sense of these experiences, build coping strategies and find direction during a time of rapid change.

How Counselling Can Help Students

Counselling is a collaborative space where you can talk through whatever you’re carrying - without judgement. Our clinicians help you understand your emotional patterns, develop strategies to manage stress and build tools you can use in daily life and during high-pressure periods.

We work with students to strengthen confidence, regulate emotions, improve study routines, set boundaries, navigate relationships and support long-term wellbeing. Whether you’re in crisis or simply feeling off-balance, counselling can help you feel more grounded and in control of your university experience.

Your Questions, Answered.

Here are answers to common questions university students ask about counselling.

Is psychology confidential?

Yes. Sessions are confidential unless there is a safety concern. Your university does not receive your notes, academic staff do not have access and your attendance is not recorded on any academic file.

Do I need a referral?

No - you can book directly. If you have a GP, you may also be eligible for a Mental Health Treatment Plan to access Medicare rebates.

What if I’m not sure what I need help with?

That’s very common. Many students come in simply feeling overwhelmed, stuck or unsure. Your clinician will help you explore what’s been happening and work out where to begin.

Can counselling help with academic pressure or performance?

Yes. We regularly support students with exam stress, performance anxiety, perfectionism and building healthy study habits. Counselling can help you perform better without burning out.

What if I’m struggling with motivation or burnout

Loss of motivation, fatigue and burnout are extremely common at university. Counselling helps you understand what’s driving the exhaustion and develop strategies to reset, reorganise and return to study with more clarity and energy.
