Medicare and psychology
You don't need a GP referral to book with us. Without one, you pay privately. To get a Medicare rebate, you need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your usual GP or your MyMedicare practice.
With a plan, Medicare pays a rebate for up to 10 individual sessions a calendar year, and you pay the gap.
Call to ask about this week's appointments. See us at Kingswood (Nepean Health Hub, Level 3) or Gledswood Hills (Level 2), with parking at both, or online by video.
Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm, or leave a message and we'll call you back.
We're away from the phones right now. Send an enquiry and we'll get back to you by the next business morning.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan is what lets you claim a Medicare rebate for sessions with a psychologist. Since 1 November 2025, the plan, its reviews and the referral come from your usual GP or your MyMedicare practice. Psychiatrists and paediatricians can still refer directly.

With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare pays a rebate for up to 10 individual and 10 group sessions a calendar year (1 January to 31 December).
The first referral covers up to 6 individual sessions. The referring doctor then reviews how you're going and can refer you again for the rest, up to 10 a year (so 4 more after the first 6).
Medicare pays a rebate for each session and you pay the gap, which is the part of the session fee that the rebate doesn't cover. The rebate depends on the length of the session and whether you see a psychologist or a clinical psychologist.
From 1 July 2026, these rebates apply to a session of 50 minutes or more.
With a psychologist (MBS item 80110)
Medicare rebate $101.55.
With a clinical psychologist (MBS item 80010)
Medicare rebate $149.05.
Video sessions of 50 minutes or more pay the same rebate as sessions in person (MBS items 91170 and 91167).
Your gap depends on the fee for your session. Call 1300 151 110 and we'll tell you the fee and the gap for your psychologist before you book.
Your gap fees also count towards the Medicare Safety Net, which can mean a bigger rebate later in the year. See how the Safety Net works.
Medicare figures checked on 7 October 2026 against the Department of Health and MBS Online.
Medicare does not cover couples sessions, so there is no Medicare rebate for couples therapy. You can still book couples therapy without a referral.
Medicare cannot be billed for a compensable injury, which means an injury covered by a workers compensation claim. With a NSW workers compensation claim, your psychologist bills the insurer for approved treatment and you pay no gap.
We also see NDIS participants, and people using private health insurance, an Employee Assistance Program or paying privately. See Referrals, rebates and funding for each option.

The gap is the part of the session fee that the Medicare rebate doesn't cover. Medicare pays a rebate for each session and you pay the gap, so a plan lowers the cost of each session rather than covering it in full. Call 1300 151 110 and we'll tell you the fee and the gap for your psychologist before you book.
