What it can feel like.

Grief is a natural response to losing someone or something important. It can follow the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a change in health or any event that reshapes the world you knew. There’s no right way to grieve, and you don’t have to carry it alone.

  • Intense sadness, emptiness or longing
  • Anger, guilt or regret about the past
  • Numbness or feeling disconnected
  • Changes in appetite, energy or sleep
  • Withdrawing from friends, work or activities
  • Struggling to adjust to life after the loss

Grief isn’t something to “get over”. It’s a process of learning to live alongside loss.

How we approach grief and loss

Our psychologists use approaches grounded in evidence, at a pace you set.

  1. 1

    Understanding your experience

Your psychologist starts with what’s going on for you, including who or what you’ve lost, how grief shows up for you and what feels hardest right now. You’ll talk about what brought you here and what you’d like to change.

  2. 2

    Choosing an approach together

Your psychologist explains the options and why they might suit you, then you agree on a plan together.

  3. 3

    Reviewing the plan together

Along the way, your psychologist checks progress with you, using measures chosen for you and what you’re working on, and adjusts the plan if needed.

What support can include
  • Grief counselling A space to share feelings and memories without judgement.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Looks at unhelpful thoughts that can make grief harder to carry.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Making room for loss while staying connected to your values.
  • Mindfulness and grounding Ways to stay present during painful moments.
  • Family or relationship support Helping people close to you talk and cope together.
  • Strengths-based identity work Exploring who you are and what matters after loss.

Psychologists who work with couples

    Our Client Care team answers

Client Care are the people who answer our phones. You don't need a GP referral, and you don't need to have it all worked out before you call.

  2. 2

    We ask a few questions

Who it’s for, what’s going on, in person or online, and whether you have a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, NDIS or WorkCover.

  3. 3

    We match you

We’ll match you with a psychologist who fits, then find a time that works for you both. You can also ask for someone by name.

Behind your psychologist

Depth behind the person you see

You see one psychologist. Behind them is a practice that invests in what they know: training through the year, supervisors on staff, and time set aside to keep up with the research.

  • Trained for the work in front of them

Our psychologists train through the year, and we train together when we take on a new approach.

  • Enough of us to match you properly

With 27 psychologists, we can put you with someone who works with what you're facing, your age group, and the way you like to work.

  • Keeping up, on purpose

New research, new frameworks and new tools get tested against what we already do. What earns its place stays.

If something isn’t working.

Tell us, or tell your psychologist. Here’s what can happen next.

  • Ask for a different psychologist

We aim to get it right first time. If not, tell us and we’ll match you with someone else.

  • Talk it through with your psychologist

Your psychologist reviews the plan with you, and can talk your care through in supervision. All our psychologists work with regular supervision and shared clinical standards.

  • Wondering about medication?

If medication might be worth considering, we can write to your GP with what we’ve found, with your consent.

How does Unbound Minds support adults through grief and loss?

We offer a safe environment to talk openly about your loss without judgement or pressure. Our psychologists use evidence-based approaches to help you understand and express emotions, cope with the practical impact of loss, and gradually adjust to life changes.

Do you try to take grief away?

No. Grief is a natural process, and the aim isn’t to remove it. Therapy supports you to move through it in your own way, with ways to handle overwhelming feelings and honour your loss.

How long does grief normally last?

There is no set timeframe. Grief looks different for everyone and can shift in intensity over time. What matters is whether the grief feels manageable or whether it is making daily life too difficult, in which case extra support may help.

What can I expect in therapy for grief and loss?

Sessions are collaborative and gentle. You set the pace, and we focus on what feels most important to you. This might include exploring memories, coping with difficult anniversaries, or finding ways to reconnect with meaning and routine.

Can therapy help even if the loss happened years ago?

Yes. Sometimes grief resurfaces later, or it may never have been fully processed. Therapy can provide space to revisit and make sense of unresolved feelings, no matter how much time has passed.
